‘Poor Things’ Director Yorgos Lanthimos Debuts Photography Exhibition in DTLA
Yorgos Lanthimos, the celebrated director known for films like Poor Things, The Favourite, and The Lobster, is expanding his artistic range with his first-ever photography exhibition, Yorgos Lanthimos: Photographs. Presented by MACK and WEBBER in DTLA, the exhibition features a striking collection of stills from his recent books, i shall sing these songs beautifully (2024) and Dear God, the Parthenon Is Still Broken (2024), offering a rare insight into his creative process beyond cinema.
Lanthimos has long been celebrated for his unique approach to filmmaking, known for his surreal, absurdist narratives. With this new exhibition, he invites viewers into a space where the boundaries between film and photography blur. The works in the show are inspired by his experiences on set, with i shall sing these songs beautifully capturing moments from his most recent films Kinds of Kindness (2024), while Dear God, the Parthenon Is Still Broken reflects his work on Poor Things (2023).
The photographs are fascinating and utilize set locations in cities like New Orleans, Budapest, London, Lisbon, Alexandria, and Paris. Lanthimos’ stills have an unsettling atmosphere, drawing viewers into worlds that evoke a sense of eerie tension and emotional distance. While Lanthimos is best known for his films, this exhibition represents a departure from narrative storytelling. Freed from the constraints of time, place, or plot, these photographs stand on their own as powerful, abstract works of art. The result is an exploration of visual culture that is as odd and thought-provoking as his cinematic endeavors.
Through Yorgos Lanthimos: Photographs, the filmmaker reveals yet another dimension of his artistry, proving that his vision extends far beyond the screen and firmly establishing his place in the contemporary photographic landscape.
Lanthimos’ work will be on display at WEBBER 939 (939 S Santa Fe Ave.) from March 29 - May 24,2025.
